La Garde-Guérin

Languedoc-Roussillon

It is the archetype of a fortified village and it has kept its 12th century structure.

From the top of its plateau, La Garde Guérin is above the dramatic gorges of Chassezac and held a key position on the road to the pilgrimage to St Gilles-du-Gard, to Rome and to the Holy Land. In the Middle Ages, all the activity was structured around this road whose security was enforced by a company of independent knights. Behind the walls, the visitor may discover 31 fortified houses, restored in the 16th where the knights lived when they were watching on the road.
